PLAYBACK THEATRE IS...?
Imagine an improvised, interactive performance where audience members share emotions from daily life or tender, hidden memories.
These stories—whether brief or profound, joyful or aching—are swiftly transformed into expressions of music, movement, and metaphor.

WHERE DOES YOUR STORY BEGIN?
With no script, improvisation unfolds only when the audience feels ready to share.
Each story is a gift—to transform, transcend, and be truly heard.
There is no judgment, and what’s shared remains within the circle.
Will you be a teller, musician, actor, or conductor today?

POETRY IN PERFORMANCE
How do we honour each emotional journey with accuracy, respect, and artistry?
Seeing one’s own story played back can be surprising, insightful, or deeply cathartic.
Watching another’s story unfold may evoke powerful feelings of resonance, dissonance, or remembrance.

IMPROVISING REAL LIFE
Playback Theatre is a form of applied theatre rooted in community engagement.
Some are drawn to its therapeutic power; others to its potential for social change.
Founded in 1975 by Jonathan Fox and Jo Salas, Playback Theatre is now practised around the world.
As we listen and bear witness, we are connected by our shared humanity...both ordinary and extraordinary.

THE PERFORMANCE
A Rough Guide
1PRE-SHOW
It all begins with trust!
We settle in with some team building exercises or warm up games. We check in with one another. Sometimes there’s a pre-show mini-exhibition.
2OPENING
Sharing our own!
The team shares their own stories in relation to the theme of the show. This gives everyone a sampler of various ways in which thoughts and feelings can be played back.
3STORIES
Sharing yours!
The floor is now open to the audience to share their stories. The performing team skilfully transports the audience to a different time, place or space with their acting, props, and music.
4CLOSING
Thank you!
We wrap up with a recap of the beautiful stories that connected the people in the room. All are welcome to linger and chat.
