  • PLAYBACK THEATRE IS...?

    Imagine an interactive, improvised performance.

Audience members share emotions from their daily lives, or from sweet, hidden memories.

These stories--be they short or long, light-hearted or painful--are almost immediately presented through music, movement and metaphor.

    WHERE DOES YOUR STORY BEGIN?

Since there is no script, there will be no improvisation until the audience feels comfortable enough to share.

Every story is a gift to transform, to transcend, to be heard and acknowledged.

There is no judgement, and the stories stay within the assembled group.

Will you be a teller, musician, actor or conductor today?

    POETRY IN PERFORMANCE

How do we honour each emotional journey accurately, respectfully and artistically?

The experience of seeing one's own story played back can be surprising, insightful or cathartic.

The experience of watching someone else’s story being played back

can stir up powerful feelings of resonance, dissonance or remembrance.

    IMPROVISING REAL LIFE

Playback theatre is a form of applied theatre that focuses on community engagement.

Some believe in its therapeutic qualities, while others are excited by the possibility of social change.

The first playback theatre company was founded by Jonathan Fox and Jo Salas in 1975,

and the form is now actively practised around the world.

As we listen and we witness, we are united by our common humanity, whether ordinary or extraordinary.

  • THE PERFORMANCE

    A Rough Guide

    1

    PRE-SHOW

    It all begins with trust!

We settle in with some team building exercises or warm up games. We check in with one another. Sometimes there’s a pre-show mini-exhibition.

    2

    OPENING

    Sharing our own!

The team shares their own stories in relation to the theme of the show. This gives everyone a sampler of various ways in which thoughts and feelings can be played back.

    3

    STORIES

    Sharing yours!

The floor is now open to the audience to share their stories. The performing team skilfully transports the audience to a different time, place or space with their acting, props, and music.

    4

    CLOSING

    Thank you!

We wrap up with a recap of the beautiful stories that connected the people in the room. All are welcome to linger and chat.
